EX-DEPED CHIEF QUISUMBING PASSES AWAY

Dr. Lourdes Quisumbing, the first woman Secretary of Education, Culture and Sports Department who gave her service under the term of former President Corazon Aquino, died at the age of 96 on Saturday.

A Miriam College statement cited “her tenure marked the expansion of free public education to the secondary level, an increase in the share of education in the national budget, rationalization of higher education, and an emphasis on values education.”

Quisumbing was also known as secretary-general of the UNESCO National Commission in the Philippines, appointed in January 1990 with the rank of ambassador in the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).
