DOTR DISPATCHES OVER 200 UNITS OF MODERN PUVS

The first batch of modernized public utility vehicles (PUVs) are dispatched to be utilized soon by the public.

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) led the roll out Thursday morning, featuring more than 200 units.

The program, said to be the biggest non-infrastructure project of the Duterte administration, wished to give commuters a convenient and safer riding experience and eventually give higher income to members of the transport sector.

This becomes a reality despite the number of protests and strikes staged by the oppositions.

DOTr Undersecretary Thomas 'Tim' Orbos meantime acknowledged the need for faster issuance of franchise and loan to members of the sector.

While there are challenges, Atty. Aileen Lizada of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) said jeepney operators will be enticed to invest to it once they see the public patronizing the new PUV model designed to be fuel-efficient.

Aside from improving the riders' experience through the program, the DOTr is also pushing for an institutional change for the benefit of the drivers.

Although the Alliance of Concerned Transport Organization (ACTO) supported the modernization scheme, their appeal for its gradual implementation remains.

Following the launch held at Quirino Grandstand, Manila, ACTO National President Efren De Luna raised the possibility that capitalists may control the program.
